What is Pilates?
Pilates is a method of exercise developed by Joseph Pilates nearly one hundred years ago. The Pilates Method focuses on the development of the deep core abdominal and back muscles by utilizing six principles:
- Centering of the torso
to develop awareness throughout the body. By focusing on the quality of the exercises, not the quantity, results can be achieved without massive repetition, or more agressive programs can be developed depending on the client's goals.
The benefits of Pilates include strength, flexibility, and longer, leaner muscles that result in graceful movement and flow. As a result, the Pilates practitioner will look better, feel better, and move with ease. Many professional dancers practice Pilates specifically for these reasons. The exercises take place-using mats on the floor or on various pieces of equipment such as the Reformer, Cadillac, Wunda Chair, and more.
